check newsThis last week has been a great week for the research and development part of my plan where I continue to learn how to use Social Media to improve the various area’s of our lives.  I find the more I open myself up and learn new ways to improve the value I add to the conversation the more good things start to happen.  The first event of the week was for the Social Media Club Victoria Chapter monthly meeting.  This months meeting featured a panel of local journalists to discuss how they are integrating social media into the way they gather and distribute news.  One of the best parts of the evening is when Dana Hutchings, host and producer of Island 30, started to explain how social media helped them to save the station from being closed. Dana explains on the video how they used a Facebook page to gain support and develop some momentum for their lofty goals of keeping the Chek News Alive.  It was a lot of fun to make but turned out very shaky.  Turn up your speakers because it is worth hearing.

I think Social Media is what you make it.  Using Social Media to build new, and stay connected with existing, relationships is a great way for any business owner who pride themselves on having an open door policy and encourage feedback to help improve and grow their business.  If you do not want to hear what you customers think and do not want to improve your product or services then social media is not for you.  Business owners who can honestly say social media is improving their businesses say that being organized and deliberate about how you spend your time using social media is important to maintain longterm success.  Planning in advance and deciding exactly what you hope to accomplish with your Social Strategy will help you to become really clear and decide how to use these social marketing and engagement tools to build or improve your current business.
